Kennywood has been around for 122 Years, so they have lots of defunct rides. You may think that all of these rides are completely gone, but you'd be mistaken in thinking that. There are some remnants of rides that are now defunct, and I wanted to make a list of them. So, we are going to go over them. For this list, we are going to start at the entrance, go through the tunnel, then go forward and go around the park counter clockwise.
Remnant 1: Former Ride Vehicles at Entrance
In the past few years, Kennywood has put vehicles from defunct rides at the entrance. These are ride vehicles from Turnpike, Jr. Turnpike, and Log Jammer. Guests are allowed to get in these vehicles, and the vehicles are all in very good condition.
Remnant 2: The Old Rotor
Kennywood has had some Rotor Flat Rides in the past. Eventually, one of the rotors was closed. To replace it, they turned it into a Double Story restaurant. Over time, this became the Candy Kaleidoscope and lockers.
Remnant 3: Turnpike's Lights and Exit
In 2009, Kennywood announced the removal of Turnpike. They also announced how it would be replaced by Skyrocket in 2010. When Turnpike was built, they added street lights, similar to what you'd find at a highway, right by Turnpike. However, these still worked, so they didn't feel a need to remove them. Also, if you look closely, you can still see the exit from Turnpike right by these lights.
Remnant 4: The Old Mill's Original Water Mill
Right across from Skyrocket, you have The Old Mill. As part of the building, there is a mock water mill. The one currently there is not the original, though. At some point, they removed the original water mill and replaced it. The original, though, is right across from Skyrocket, right at the side of The Old Mill.
Remnant 5: Dipper's Stars and Moon
Kennywood used to have a popular wooden coaster called Dipper. This ride operated between 1958 and 1984 in its final form. It was replaced by Raging Rapids. The old PTC Train used to be on display, but it has not been made public on what happened to the train. Dipper also used to have lights shaped like stars and a moon. After Dipper Closed, the stars and moon were moved to Jackrabbit as decorations, and they have been there ever since.
Remnant 6: Log Jammer Flume
I am not completely sure if this is still there, but there, at one point, was a Log Jammer Flume placed right by Steel Curtain's Queue. During Phantom Fright Nights and Happy Hauntings 2019, there were more decorations, showing a grave for Log Jammer.
Remnant 7: Whip's Original Pavilion
When Whip opened, it used to have a Pavilion over it. This pavilion was there until 2002. In 2002, a microburst hit Kennywood. This caused the pavilion to fall on guests, and a woman died in this accident. After this incident, Kennywood was able to fix Whip, so it still operates today. The pavilion was rebuilt by Log Jammer. It is still around now, though some people thought that it would be removed for Steeler's Country.
Remnant 8: Original Old Mill Decorations
When The Old Mill first opened, it used to have Dragons on the front of the boats. Something unclear is when the dragon heads were removed, but they were moved to Pagoda at some point as decorations.
Remnant 9: Kennywood Casino
In 1899, Kennywood opened the No-Gambling Casino. This place was later converted to the Parkside Cafe, which still exists today.
Remnant 10: Steel Phantom/Phantom's Revenge Track
When Steel Phantom was converted to Phantom's Revenge, they kept some of the original track. This was everywhere from the final brake run all the way through the station, lift hill, and through the top of the second hill. In 2009, though, they retracked the original Arrow track with new Morgan track from the top of the lift through the second hill. Ever since then, the track was in storage for 9 years. In 2018, when Thomas Town opened, they put some of the original Steel Phantom/Phantom's Revenge as theming for Diesel Drivers.
Remnant 11: Log Jammer Supports
In 2017, Kennywood announced the removal of Log Jammer, their old Arrow Log Flume. The entire ride was in storage until the construction of Thomas Town. When they were building Diesel Drivers, they put these supports with the old Phantom track. These supports are still there.
Remnant 12: Olde Kennywood Railroad Train
In 2018, when Kennywood opened Thomas Town, they converted the Olde Kennywood Railroad into Journey with Thomas. Kennywood didn't get rid of the Olde Kennywood Railroad's train, though. The train can still be seen on the ride in storage usually. On very high attendance days, such as Holiday Lights, they will run the old train with the Thomas themed train.
Remnant 13: Dipper's Sign
After Dipper closed in 1984, they had the entrance sign in storage. In 2014, when they opened Waffles and Dinges, they put the entrance sign on top of the new stand.
Remnant 14: Laser Loop's Station
In 1980, Kennywood had opened Laser Loop. They decided to close Laser Loop in 1990 to make room for Steel Phantom. They reused Laser Loop's station for Steel Phantom. They didn't even add air gates. When Steel Phantom was turned to Phantom's Revenge, they painted the station Green and Purple, but it is still the same station.
Remnant 15: Steel Phantom Chassis
When Steel Phantom opened in 1991, it had trains completely made by Arrow Dynamics. Later, when they converted it to Phantom's Revenge, they wanted to reuse parts, but they couldn't keep the over-the-shoulder restraints, as the ride would be super uncomfortable. For Phantom's opening, they had D.H. Morgan convert the trains to use new lap bars and to use a new shell. They reused the Chassis from Steel Phantom. In 2014, they got new Fiberglass shells, but it seems that they may still use the original Arrow chassis.
Remnant 16: Steel Phantom's Lift Hill
When converting Steel Phantom into Phantom's Revenge, Kennywood wanted to keep the good and fix the bad. Many people praised the first half, so Kennywood kept it exactly the same, just with a repaint. The drop through the second hill were retracked in 2009, but this section is still Arrow track, and you can still even hear the classic Arrow Anti Rollback noises.
Remnant 17: The Original Carousel Shelter
Kennywood has had different shelters in the past for their carousel. One of them was repurposed into a new building. In 2014, they turned an old shelter into a Johnny Rockets. The Johnny Rockets here has takout and dine in usually. They also play older songs and have free song selections there.
I hope you enjoyed this. If you are interested, I will try to do an updated version that will include images later this year.
