Years ago, Schwarzkopf was a very large ride manufacturing company. By the 1990s, however, they weren't selling as many major looping coasters, following the accident on Mindbender at Galaxyland. They started selling a new flat ride, though, around the same time: The Bayern Kurve.
There were several Bayern Kurves made, but only around 6 still operate today. I wanted to give my review of this flat ride model.
Now, I should first say that I have only ridden the one at Kennywood. One has recently arrived at Knoebels, but nobody has ridden it. I haven't been on the traveling fair ones and I have never been to California's Great America.
Part 1: Ride Layout
The rides go in a circular layout at around a 45 degree angle. The one I rode pulls some insane laterals going through at that angle. While the track is banked at 45 degrees and is placed at a 45 degree angle, the cars are tilted at a 45 degree angle, so you are always level.
Part 2: Speed
One point I want to touch on is the insane speed. From what I can tell, all of the remaining Bayern Kurve rides except the one at CGA run at insane speeds. The on at CGA, though, appears to run like a kiddie coaster.
Part 3: Restraints
Something that people very rarely mention are the restraints on the Jet Stars, Jumbo Jets, and Bayern Kurves. These are all single-file seats where you sit in a tub with just a seatbelt and grab bars. These restraints are very comfortable.
Part 4: Smoothness
This flat ride is on a track and acts mostly like a coaster. In fact, I should point out that the only reason that this is a flat ride is some moving cable from the middle. Due to the insane speeds and years of operation, though, the Bayern Kurve at Kennywood ran like a wooden coaster: not that smooth, but not rough.
In the end, I just want to say that this is was the best flat ride at Kennywood. Now, I didn't ride Skycoaster or Black Widow, however, I don't think Skycoasters would be better than Bayern Kurves, and the Zamperla rides at Kennywood are good, but not as good as the other flats. It is sad to see this go, but there will be that new Bayern Kurve coming to Knoebels, which is around 4 hours away, so I might ride that in the near future, but that is all I can say for now.
